This fine mahogany late 18th century armchair ($1500) and side chair ($700) are in the finest British Hepplewhite tradition. However, they were made in North Germany. George Hepplewhite gave his name to a whole style of furnishings in the late 18th century. This style neatly follows Chippendale and leads into Sheraton. We have George's widow to thank for this felicity. It was she who assembled George's furniture designs and published them in a guide, following Thomas Chippendale's famous marketing coup. Hence British design flourished in America, as well as Denmark, Scandinavia and the German countries. The North German joiners have given the standard English design a little local flair by adding the arch at the base of the back. Otherwise they might be indistinguishable from the products of Bristol or London.

They are 63 cm tall, and all the bronze has been regilded, a frighteningly costly process with recent gold prices! The porcelain comes from 18th century Sevres moulds. The molds are from about 1760. A pair of C1760 vases of this form, but painted with Chinoiserie scenes, were formerly in the E.M. Hodgkins Collection, London. Our porcelain vignettes are classical, beautifully hand painted, a different scene for each. The porcelain, by the way, has a rectangular slot in each handle that was integral to the 18th century molding, designed to accommodate an ormolu candle branch. Price per Unit (PAIR): $12,000.00

A Robert Garrard sterling silver dish 28 cm across and 3 1/2 cm high weighs 868 grams. The plate is London, 1804, George III. Unfortunately the reverse in engraved with a presentation inscription from 1985. While Garrards have been the Royal Goldsmiths since 1830 (after the decline of Rundel, Bridge and Rundel), they had been the makers of silver to George III as Prince of Wales and also to his father, Frederick, Prince of Wales. Oddly, there is no crest, motto or armorial present. Nor is there any sign of there having ever been one.
